Calgary Police Veterans Association Benevolent Fund

Definition:

The Calgary Police Veterans Association Benevolent Fund is financed by, but not limited to, donations and a portion of annual dues. The purpose of the fund is to assist members in good standing in the event of hardship that cannot be resolved by any other means and is considered an undue financial strain on the applicant. Humanitarian donations to police related charities or individuals up to $500.00 can also be considered.

Application and Procedure:

1. Application for benefit can be made by the applying member, next of kin or another CPVA member in good standing, if the applicant member is unable to make a claim themselves.
2. Application in writing will be delivered directly to the President of the CPVA or his/her designate in his/her absence. The identity of those utilizing the benevolence program will be kept confidential within the confines of the Benevolent Fund Committee, unless required by law to disclose.
3. The application should include circumstances of the hardship and amount of funds required to assist the applicant.
4. Consideration of the total assets of the fund must be considered by the Benevolent Fund Committee so as not to unduly drain the fund. Partial granting of funding is an acceptable resolution.
5. Approval will be determined by a vote of the Benevolent Fund Committee and will require a majority. The CPVA President will cast a tie breaking vote if required.
6. Whenever possible, funds will be dispersed to a third party, not directly to the applicant unless circumstances dictate otherwise.
7. Humanitarian donations of up to $500 can be approved by the CPVA Treasurer.

Circumstances not permitted to be covered:

1. Repayment of consumer debt, loans or credit cards.
2. Insurance premiums.
3. School tuition.
4. Recovery of expenses incurred without substantial financial burden.
5. Areas considered unethical/illegal.

Tax deduction for donations:

The CPVA is not a Registered Charity at this time. It is a Non Profit Society. No income tax receipts will be issued.

Many charities offer tax deduction as an incentive for people to give. Almost all tax deductible charities support persons we likely do not know. Our Benevolent Fund supports people who are members of our own Police Family and therefore, we rely on our collective sense of camaraderie to grow this fund.
