Passing of FRED MOORE

December 17, 1933 - North Battleford, Saskatchewan

March 10, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Fred Moore, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, passed away on Thursday, March 10, 2022. Fred was 88 years old.

Fred was born in North Battleford, SK, on December 17, 1933 to parents Elsie (Gould) and Tom Moore. The family moved to Battleford where Fred and his sister Bunnie, grew up in what was then a small Saskatchewan town. Fred often left his chores unfinished to ride bareback across hills and fields and along the banks of the Saskatchewan River. Fred married Fay Hoskin in 1956. At that time, he was a switchman with the CNR and Fay was nursing at the Notre Dame Hospital. They started their family in 1957 and made the decision to move to Calgary, AB in 1958. Calgary was booming and Fred joined the Calgary City Police.

In 1960, Fred became the founding member of the Calgary City Police Canine Unit. He and his Doberman Ember were part of the “Original Four”. This team of enthusiastic police officers and police dogs broke trail for the extraordinary Calgary Police Canine Unit that serves the city today.

Fred and Fay raised their three children, Shannon, Tom and Kirk on Hendon Drive where their home was the site of many parties and celebrations. Fred was a gracious host and welcomed every opportunity to fill their house with family, friends and fun.

In 1981, Fred retired from CPS and became a Security Advisor for Imperial Oil. This move provided opportunities for Fred to use his remarkable people skills in a corporate environment and introduced him to many new friends. He retired from Imperial Oil in 1992 and devoted his retirement to community service.

Fred was an original member of the Bar-O-R Riders, a member of the 78th Fraser Highlanders, Stampede Board Volunteer, Olympic Volunteer and an active member of the North East Eye Opener Lions Club.

When Fay died in 2002, Fred immersed himself in Lions service initiatives. His work as Lions Quest Chairman and The Lions Dog Guides project are just a few examples of Fred’s service to others.

Fred met his second wife, Paula Hagel, through the Lions Club and they married in 2011. Together, they devoted countless hours to Lion’s projects and activities, enjoyed adventures with their RV glamping friends, and celebrated many milestones with their growing families.

Fred will be remembered with love and laughter by many life long friends and his children, Shannon (Dave), Tom (Sue Ellen) and Kirk; grandchildren, Kristen (Allan), Ryan (Susan), Mallory (Brett), and Zac (Amy); great-grandchildren, Keira, Nola, Jackson, Aidan, Michaela, Evelyn, Flora, Payton, Ian, and Sienna; his beloved sister, Bunnie MacFarlane; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He will also be fondly remembered by Paula’s children, Ed (Di), Derek, Corinne (Joe) and their children and grandchildren.

Fred was predeceased by his wife Paula Hagel Moore in 2021; Fay Hoskin Moore in 2002; his parents, Elsie and Tom Moore; in-laws, Jack and Flora Hoskin; brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Sharon Hoskin; niece, Shelly Hoskin; brother-in-law, Gordon MacFarlane; and far too many wonderful friends to name.

We wish to thank the special friends and family who called, emailed, sent text messages, prayers and wishes while Dad’s health declined. We also wish to acknowledge the compassionate and professional care Dad received from the wonderful staff at Newport Harbour Care Centre, Portside.
