Calgary Mounted Constabulary Coin

Please, as always, this fan out contains personal CPS details intended

only for the members of the CPVA.

From 1940 to 1945, the Calgary Police Service authorized an auxiliary branch to aid in maintaining public peace during the Second World War. Initially named the Calgary Special Constabulary, the group was reformed as the Calgary Mounted Constabulary in 1942. The members were armed special constables and patrolled Calgary’s outlying residential areas and the Glenmore Reservoir.

A member of the unit, William Keddie, took leave to join the war effort overseas. Fighting with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, he was injured on Oct. 23, 1944, at Breskens Pocket in the Netherlands. Keddie sadly passed from his injuries on Oct. 29, 1944. He is remembered with a memorial plaque in the Arthur Duncan Memorial Hall.

As an extension of the Heritage Series coins depicting the badges of Bowness, Forest Lawn and Montgomery Police Departments, a tribute coin has been created to remember the Calgary Mounted Constabulary. The coin shares the same shape as the Heritage Series coins, depicts the CPS forage cap badge from the 1940s on one side, and a picture of a Calgary Mounted Constabulary member on the other. A circular crest depicting the Calgary Special Constabulary arm band is represented with the addition of Calgary Mounted Constabulary around the crest.

Proceeds raised from the sale of this challenge coin will be donated to the Youthlink Calgary Police Interpretive Centre. Youthlink is a registered charity dedicated to the preservation of CPS history, and engaging and educating local youth.
