Cst. Rick Sonnenberg #2960 was killed in the early hours of Oct. 8, 1993, when he and his partner were alerted about a stolen vehicle. As the vehicle headed in their direction, Cst. Rick Sonnenberg #2960 attempted to lay down a spike belt. He was struck by the speeding car and died instantly.

 

A youth out on bail was convicted of criminal negligence causing death, hit and run and possession of stolen vehicle.

 

Following Cst. Rick Sonnenberg’s death, his family was instrumental in our Service acquiring our police helicopters, HAWC1 in 1995 and HAWC2 in 2005.

 

We will continue to honour his legacy.

These are exciting times for the Calgary Police Service's Air Services Unit. Last year marked a decade of continuous service for Canada's first municipal police helicopter, and today the unit is preparing to put a second helicopter into operation

On October 8th 2015, the Calgary Police Service held a short service for fallen member Constable Rick Sonnenberg #2960. Many members came to share in the moment as HAWCS flew overhead.
