Passing of CPVA Chaplain Jack Ashby
Sadly, I must pass on the news that our Chaplain, Jack Ashby passed away suddenly on Tuesday January 10, 2023 at the age of 76. Jack took a fall at home the day before after suffering flu like symptoms. He was taken to the South Campus Hospital and died from heart related issues. Many of you may know Jack and Gerri, (Jacks wife) as Jack served as our volunteer Chaplain since 2014. Jack and Gerri attended many luncheons over the years and Jack always gave a thoughtful and meaningful Grace at the start of our Christmas Party. Jack always went out of his way to visit so many Veterans in the hospital. In fact, for the first few years he paid the parking fees himself until we found out he was not issued a parking pass by AHS.
He never mentioned it, but when we found out the CPVA started paying until he got a parking pass from AHS. Jack made himself available to all the members of the CPVA and many sought him out for support and spiritual guidance. Gerri told me that he was so proud of the Calgary Police Veterans and was so honoured to be accepted within our Police Family. Gerri got permission to have Jack dressed in his CPS Chaplains Uniform. He would have been so proud of that.
Funeral Service will be held in the Harvest Room at First Alliance Church (12345-40th Street SE) on Sunday, January 22, 2023 at 2:00 pm with visitation prior to service. In honour of Jack’s love for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, those attending the service are invited to wear their favorite Roughrider’s gear. For those unable to attend the service, it will be available through livestream.
