Passing of Frank Mitchell #1169
As with all or our fan outs, please do not repost on any Social Media Site. This email contains person information that is intended for the membership of the CPVA only. Thank you.
Sadly, our friend and brother, Frank Mitchell, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at home in the early hours of April 4, 2026. Frank was just a few weeks away from his 91st birthday.
Frank joined the Calgary Police Department on January 18, 1960. Before beginning his policing career, he served six years in the Canadian Armed Forces. Throughout his time with the Service, he received multiple commendations and held positions in both the Patrol Division and the Detective Division. In July 1986, he was promoted to Superintendent and transferred from the Special Crimes Section to the Headquarters Division as Officer in Charge. The following year, in April 1987, he moved to the newly formed Staff Development Division, again serving as Officer in Charge. He retired on March 31, 1989. Including his 6 years in the Canadian Armed Forces, Frank had 35 years of pensionable service.
I spoke to Frank’s son, Neil Mitchell, at length on Sunday and he was doing as well as could be expected. He and his Dad were obviously very close. Neil was Frank and Wollene’s only child. Frank lost his beloved wife, Wollene in 2022. He is survived by Neil, Max his grandson and Heidi, his great granddaughter.
Frank was an avid fan of the CPVA luncheons and special events. Frank was known as a prankster and several times, I would find a greeting card filled with mysterious messages directed towards myself when I hosted the Christmas party and September BBQ. It took me a few years to figure out who the author was and only when I used my Strike Force surveillance skills to catch him red handed dropping an envelope off at the podium. Frank always was very helpful when I needed information about some of our more senior members, letting me know how their health was and providing me with person details upon their deaths. Frank was such a kind man with an amazing sense of humour. Frank was present at the last luncheon on April 1st just as he was present so many times before, with his crew of our most senior and respected veterans. I know many, including myself, are going to miss him and his presence very much.
At Franks request, there will be no formal service, however, Neil tells me that a Memorial or Celebration of Life may be arranged in the future. I will be sure to let all of you know when Neil lets me know. If you would like to reach out to Neil and give words of support or share a story you may have about Frank, please feel free to do so at email: ngm58@hotmail.com
